Zia Record release special Waylon Jennings & Sanford Clark "Audio Archives, Volume 1" for Record Store Day 2014

Sun Studios in Memphis. Muscle Shoals Sound Studio in Alabama. Sound City in Los Angeles.

Audio Recorders of Arizona.

One look at the client ledger and it’s impossible to deny the impact Floyd Ramsey’s compact downtown Phoenix studio had on the music of the Southwest in the 50s and 60s: Lee Hazlewood, Duane Eddy, Al Casey, Skip & Flip, Dyke and the Blazers, Goose Creek Symphony…and Waylon Jennings and Sanford Clark.

Zia Records, Arizona’s oldest and largest independent record store chain, has teamed with Arizona historian and archivist John P. Dixon to launch the Audio Recorders Archive project, a series of exclusive limited-edition 45 RPM singles. On April 19th, Record Store Day 2014, Zia Records will release the first installment: Waylon Jennings, “My Baby Walks All Over Me” b/w Sanford Clark, “It’s Nothing To Me.”

“As the music business and faces changed these past years, Zia kept going and growing,” Dixon says. “They have always supported Arizona's music, present and past, and as a customer and vendor to this day, I was thrilled when approached to be a part of Record Store Day this year.”

Released before departing for Nashville (and super-stardom), Jennings’ contribution remains one of his finest early recordings, infused with the singer’s charm and wit. Clark’s side is a gunslinging classic, featuring fuzzed pedal steel and gunshots. It became a favorite of Bob Dylan, who included the song in his Theme Time Radio Hour program.

“These Waylon and Sanford tracks are great examples of a unique sound that began right here in 1956,” Dixon says.

Pressed on gold vinyl and limited to 1,000 copies nationwide, both songs were recorded during Audio Recorders’ 60s golden age, boasting the studio’s signature twang and reverb. Originally released by Audio Recorders’ label Ramco, this release marks the first time these songs have been pressed to vinyl since their initial run. The single is being distributed by Light in the Attic Distribution.

“This Waylon Jennings/Sanford Clark pairing is just the first of several more Zia/Audio Recorders reissues in the upcoming months,” Dixon says.

“Each one will celebrate the rich history of these two local business success stories and our varied and rich musical past. I am honored to be involved in this vinyl revival series as we celebrate the ‘Phoenix Sound’ of Audio Recorders and Record Store Day at Zia Records with this limited release.”

Every afternoon, our pal NeanderPaul of KDKB 93.3 pulls out a special track for Zia Records' Second Helping. Not only does he pick a special song, but he blogs about it too. Today he pulled "Trip Through Your Wires," from U2's The Joshua Tree.

Paul writes:

"...this stuff, was a game-changer. The first steps toward super-legendary status."

Crosses +++ Coming to Zia Records, Interviewed at Up on the Sun

Atención! Crosses ††† is coming to Zia Records Phoenix (1850 W. Camelback) today at 6 PM, to sign copies of ††† on CD & LP.

Up On The Sun has a great interview with Chino Moreno about new Deftones music on the horizon, and the influence of classic cult cinema on the sound of †††   :

The Holy Mountain is a big influence on the record, by Alejandro Jodorowsky. It's pretty out there. I've been a big fan of a lot of his movies for awhile, but that one in particular is, very influential on the album, at least aesthetically. But even you know, watching Russ Meyer films, like '60s cult movies.

And mainly it was just at a time where, you know, we're still doing our own thing but we were all looking for new, older movies that we might have missed, because that's sort of a hobby that we all share. If someone finds a movie we share it, and that was sort of the catalyst for bringing us together besides music.

Zia Records "You Heard Us Back When, Volume 8" tracklisting announced!

Zia Records is proud to announce the release and tracklist of our newest Local Music Compilation, “You Heard Us Back When, Volume 8”, on sale at all Zia stores on National Record Store Day, Saturday April 19th!

The series started when Record Store Day did, to bring back a great Zia tradition and highlight the role Record Stores have always and continue to play in not only supporting local music and musicians, but in creating them.  Many an aspiring artist has spent countless hours combing bins for buried treasure, just hanging out with time to kill, and soaking up the new sounds you hear in Record Stores.  You can find more music online than one could listen to in several lifetimes, but at some point you got to get out of the house, and there ain’t nothin’ like the real thing.

So here’s the real deal.  40 tracks crammed onto two discs, each band at a different point along their journey.  Some just starting to reach beyond the influences they know and admire, and others who have found and honed their unique voice in the crowd.  The best part about it all is that these aren’t superstars that you need to wait several years to see when they finally hit your town.  They are from your town.  Local.  Available.  You just have to seek them out wherever they are playing tonight.

We are pleased once again to donate the proceeds of the compilation to charity, and grateful to the artists for granting the use of their music for a worthy cause.  Arizona Animal Welfare League and the Nevada Humane Society are the joint beneficiaries. Arizona Animal Welfare League & SPCA (AAWL & SPCA) is the largest and oldest no-kill shelter in Arizona, with a mission and vision to be the community’s leading source for pet adoptions, veterinary services, volunteer opportunities, humane education and expertise in animal welfare.  Nevada Humane Society’s mission as a no-kill animal welfare organization is to find homes and provide care for homeless pets while creating a no-kill community.  Zia Records is proud and honored to work with these two organizations this year.  For more information visit,  https://aawl.org/ and http://www.nevadahumanesociety.org/.

For more information on all the bands featured on the compilation, visit the links below!

We appreciate your support; please spread the word on this upcoming compilation. We look forward to seeing you all on Record Store Day!
